Program Development
The Technical Communication Certificate Program has grown incrementally since the Spring of 2002, beginning with a very successful Technical Writing & Editing class. It became apparent to course administrators that continuing education students wanted more comprehensive training in Technical Communications, and in an online format that they could easily fit into their lifestyles.
However, we also wanted to make sure that the program would train students in technical communication competencies that are relevant and important to current industry practices.
To our advantage, we were able to draw on a Report of the Canadian Interests Committee (completed in May, 1997) that investigated the current status of technical communication program in Canada, and formulated recommendations for curriculum for technical communicators based on industry needs. Our curriculum was based on a review of this report, along with an analysis of what professionals might need in the way of professional development in order to shift their considerable knowledge, experience, and skills towards a technical communication career path.
Key considerations were content quality and comprehensiveness, relevancy, flexibility, cost, duration, and instructor qualifications.
A call went across the Society for Technical Communicators web site for seasoned instructors with a knack for online instruction that would fit this program. The program was expanded into a full-fledged certificate program with 5 core courses and 7 electives in the fall of 2003, with a limited number of intakes. With the successful implementation of a year of training under our belts, the program is now in its second year and is continually under review and updating to ensure its currency and relevancy. We strive to continue to fine-tune this program into the best online Technical Communication Certificate available.
