Prior Learning Assessment (PLA)

What is Prior Learning Assessment?

We have a formalized Prior Learning Asssessment (PLA) process for the following courses within our Technical Communication Certificate Program. This PLA process has been set up to allow us to recognize and place students appropriately based on their prior learning and experience.

Note that you are not able to challenge any more than three (3) courses in the program through Prior Learning Assessment.

If you have taken courses at other public post-secondary institutions, you may be eligible for advanced standing. This is a different process from the Prior Learning Assessment process, and involves submission of official transcripts from the school where you took your equivalent training.

Regardless of whether you are applying for Prior Learning Assessment or Advanced Standing, you must apply to and be accepted into the Technical Communication Certificate program PRIOR to requesting Prior Learning Assessment or Advanced Standing.

Technical Communication courses currently eligible for Prior Learning Assessment:

  • PDTW 001 (Technical Writing & Editing I)
  • PDTO 001 (Technical Writing Tools I)
  • PDAA 001 (Adobe Acrobat)
  • PDPM 001 (Project Management for Technical Writers)

(Note that there is a processing fee associated with the PLA process.)
