Advisory Group

The Technical Communication Advisory Group has been formed to review and advise Vancouver Island University administration on issues relating to the relevancy, curriculum, and quality of the Technical Communication Certificate Program at Vancouver Island University.

Term of appointment

Advising Group members are volunteers appointed for a three-year term. If they wish to opt out of the Advising Group, they need to notify the administrator so that a replacement can be appointed.

We have a wide selection of Advisory Group members from:

  • Industry
  • Students
  • Instructors
  • Administration
  • Trade organizations

A wide distribution of individuals in this group ensures well-rounded input from a variety of viewpoints and sources. If you or someone you know might be a good fit for this group, please contact the Program Administrator (julie.clarke@viu.ca).

Duties of appointees

Appointees are requested to advise Vancouver Island University administration of issues relating to the field of Technical Communication, specifically:

  • Relevancy of curriculum and program to real-world employment in Technical Communication field
  • Completeness of curriculum and program
  • New issues/training required in the field
  • Realistic employment prospects for students graduating from program
  • Issues regarding student recruitment and placement
  • Feedback on competency of graduates
  • Long-range program planning
  • Instructor development
  • Student development

Time Commitment

The actual time commitment of Advisory Group members is minimal, since all meetings and discussions will be conducted through the WebCT online forum. The Program Administrator is responsible for disbursing information to Advisory Group members and initiating discussion questions to garner input from members.
